Thoughts on Beginning the Path to Security Professional

Over the past month, I have been fascinated with the Information Security (InfoSec) aspect of Information Technology (IT). I have been in IT for a long time, and have finally become a Network Administrator (NetAdmin) as my job. I have begun reading a number of security blogs and listening to security podcasts. My main source for security blogs is the Feedburner network, Security Bloggers Network, an aggregated feed of (currently) 66 security blogs in the blogosphere. There are a lot of great writer on that feed, and I have already learned a lot from this great resource.

Another great resource is the Security Catalyst Community that Michael Santarcangelo has created for security professionals to “allow us [security professionals] all a safe place to seek help, allow ‘everyone’ a chance to contribute, and share your passions; learn from others; contribute to your personal growth.” The forums are an open community that even security newbie like me can contribute. I, honestly, do not feel intimidated when I pose a question in this community, which is what I think that Mr. Santarcangelo was shooting for when he created this community. Everyone has been very forthcoming with help and information. I always feel that I will get a answer to point me in the direction that I need when I make a posting there.

Currently, I have no certifications, but I am studying for A+ and Network+ as stepping stones to some more security focused certifications. I will probably go through CCNA and Security+ to start my security certs. I got a cert training suite from TestOut that I am going through. They seem to be really good videos and I am enjoying them.

I am also beginning to assemble a library of titles that are recommending through many channels. There is a thread on the Security Catalyst Community, as well as Richard Bejtlich’s Digital Boot Camp at Amazon [the first purchase was Hacking Exposed, 5th Edition, which I am trying to read in between studies].

So, at this point, I welcome any and all recommendations for any book/blog/podcast/website/forums that could help me in my search for the title of security professional.

Michael, If I were you I don’t think that I would take the A+ and Network+ certs. They are quiet basic and don’t really add much to your security goals. I would start with either the CCNA or Security+ and go from there. Just my opinion.
